Rajindra Gymkhana & Mahindra Club Rajindra Gymkhana&Mahindra Club-The Heritage Located in pristine, lush greenbaradarigardens, in the heart of the Patiala city is the majesticred-tiledand tilted roofed building of the club, Completed in1890's, itresembles the pavilion of the Oval England, and itsexoticarchitecture is the reflection of the royal grandeur oferstwhilePatiala state. It was Maharaja Rajindra Singh who was apioneeramong the Indian princes to take on the game of cricket intheright earnest. Although only 14 years of age the youngMaharajashowed great zeal and aptitude for it. The Maharaja and hisyoungbrother, Raja Ranbir Singh used to take up their position asrivalcaptains on the field, eager to inflict defeat on the otherside.After the completion of the cricket pavilion, MaharajaRajindraSingh established a regular club of Cricket and named it'PatialaCricket Club'. Also Squash was among the earliest sportsinitiatedhere in the late 19th century. The activities of thecricket clubwere looked after by Col K.M. Mistri and otherprominent coaches.In 1920, more sports were added and in 1923, itsname was changedto R.G.M.C (Rajindra Gymkhana Cricket Club) DuringMaharajaBhupindra Singh's reign many foreign teams visited Indiaand theruler saw to it that they played a match in the baradarigrounds.It was only in this magnificent ground that many of thevisitingforeign teams met their Waterloo. He was also acclaimed asBritishEmpire's leading cricketer in 1911. After the integrationofstates, the building remained a part of the cricket pavilion.PEPSUwas created in 1956 and Maharaja Yadvindra Singh was made theRajParmukh of PEPSU. This building was converted intoRajindraGymkhana & Mahindra Club (R.G.M.C) under thestewardship of theRoyal family of Patiala.
